Essential Mathematics provides
students with a learning tool that will help them develop basic
arithmetic skills, develop reasoning and problem-solving skills,
and achieve satisfaction in learning so that they will be encouraged
to continue their education in mathematics. The style of writing
gives carefully worded, thorough explanations that are direct,
easy to understand, and mathematically accurate. The use of
color, subheadings, and shaded boxes helps students understand
and reference important topics.
Students are expected to participate actively by working
margin exercises and completion examples as they progress
through each section. The answers to the margin exercises
are in the back of the text, and the answers to the completion
examples are at the end of each section. This approach provides
the students with immediate reinforcement and the instructor
with immediate feedback as to how well the students understand
the material. Space is provided in the text for students to
calculate and write answers on the text page.
The text’s flexible style allows for teaching based
on the standard lecture method and for programs based on the
cooperative learning (small group studies) or independent
study in a mathematics laboratory setting. The NCTM and AMATYC
curriculum standards have been taken into consideration in
the development of topics.
