Prealgebra: A Worktext
provides students with both an
introduction to algebra and a learning tool for reviewing
basic arithmetic skills. Selected topics from algebra are
integrated with the topics from arithmetic in such a way
that the students can strengthen their arithmetic skills and
become comfortable with the use of variables, negative
numbers, algebraic expressions, and techniques for solving
equations.
The style of writing gives carefully worded, thorough
explanations that are direct, easy to understand, and mathematically
accurate. An increased amount of white space
makes it possible for students to work out each problem
within the text. The new, full-color design as well as the
addition of high quality images and graphics create an
inviting atmosphere for the reader.
Students are expected to participate actively by working
margin exercises and completion examples as they progress
through each section. The answers to the margin
exercises are in the back of the text and the answers to the
completion examples are at the end of each section.
The text’s flexible style allows for teaching based
on the
standard lecture method and for programs based on the
cooperative learning (small group studies) or independent
study in a mathematics laboratory setting. The NCTM
and AMATYC curriculum standards have been taken into
consideration in the development of topics.
