| On October 10, 2008, the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) hosted a Mathematics Redesign Workshop for those interested in redesigning Mathematics courses. This workshop explored the reasons behind the school's decision for redesign and explained how to teach redesigned courses. To demonstrate the benefits of their redesign, Ole Miss also outlined the day-to-day running of their state-of-the-art Math Lab and illustrated how the school redesigned its math courses with outstanding success.
In redesigning the courses, Ole Miss extensively researched all of the major mathematics courseware products and selected their two top choices. They then conducted a controlled study and compared final exam grades of students who used Software A, Software B, and a textbook alone. Students who used Software A (Hawkes Learning Systems) performed significantly better than those using Software B as well as using the textbook alone.
Those who attended the workshop had the opportunity to learn how the school implemented the redesign and how it is working, met with NCAT Redesign Scholar Dr. Tristan Denley, and spoke with faculty involved in the program. Additionally, attendees received advice about specific implementation and toured Ole Miss's state-of-the-art math lab. Representatives from Hawkes Learning Systems, whose software is being used as part of the school’s redesign, also attended to demonstrate the software and answer questions about how it can be implemented in course redesigns.
